FRANKFORT, KY - Kentuckians have a new place to hunt, fish, hike and sightsee.
 
Dignitaries gathered Monday in rural Scott County to dedicate the 2,500-acre Veterans Memorial Wildlife Management Area.
 
The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources completed a deal to purchase the property near Georgetown in December. The total cost was more than $6.2 million.
 
Wildlife Commissioner Jon Gassett said purchasing the property was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Kentucky.
 
The state used $3.25 million from Kentucky's Wetlands and Stream Mitigation Fund to cover part of the purchase and to restore 19 miles of streams. The other $3 million came from federal grants.
 
The land near Georgetown is nearly 75 percent forests but also has grasslands providing a variety of habitats for different wildlife.
