Kentucky is participating in this year's national Click It or Ticket campaign aimed at ensuring motorists are using seatbelts.

A statement from the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety says officers are focusing on pickup trucks, which have the lowest seatbelt usage rate. Officers from several agencies participated in a kick-off event Monday in Louisville.

Highway Safety Director Bill Bell says the campaign is an effort to encourage motorists to buckle up as the Memorial Day holiday and summer vacation season quickly approach.

The statement says more than half of the motor vehicle fatalities in 2015 involved those who were unrestrained.

Louisville Metro Police Sgt. Bill Patterson said using a seatbelt is an easy and effective way to increase safety.

Kentucky law says everyone in a moving vehicle is required to be belted.
