Motorists on Kentucky highways this weekend may notice more state troopers making sure travelers make it to their destinations safely.

Kentucky State Police Commissioner Rodney Brewer says troopers will be watching for impaired drivers and those not wearing seat belts.

State police said in a news release that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports Thanksgiving in the most dangerous holiday of the year for motorists. The four-day holiday driving period combines heavy traffic, weather and long-distance road trips. Family celebrations also may include alcoholic beverages, possibly leading to impaired driving.

Brewer recommends simple habits to arrive safely, such as wearing a seat belt, reducing speed and avoiding driving after consuming alcohol or drugs.

The holiday enforcement period began at 6:00 pm Wednesday and runs through 11:59 pm Sunday.
