Lawmakers Toughen Accountability for Districts

A bill aimed at strengthening accountability standards for Kentucky's school districts has won final approval from state lawmakers. 

Legislators voted Tuesday night to send it to Gov. Steve Beshear for his consideration. 

The final votes came shortly before lawmakers concluded this year's legislative session. 

The measure requires school finance officers to make monthly reports to local school boards and provide an annual report to the state Education Department. It also would increase training for some school board members, depending on length of service. 

Another section would require state education officials to set minimum qualifications for school finance officers. 

The bill comes in the wake of audits that uncovered problems in some school districts.
