Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell has joined U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida in introducing legislation that would allow states to return unwanted federal funds to the Treasury to help pay down the national debt.

McConnell said in a statement that political leaders have to continue to look for ways to rein in wasteful spending, and he said he believes the latest bill, dubbed the REFUND Act, would help with that.

The proposal already has the support of the National Taxpayers Union and the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste.
