Legislation that would expedite justice in sexual assault cases was approved by a Senate Committee Thursday.

The measure sponsored by Senator Harper Angel requires law enforcement agencies to count and report the number of untested rape kits in their possession.

There is an estimated two to five-thousand backlogged rape examination kits waiting to be tested in Kentucky.

Sen. Angel says having the actual count is the first step in clearing the shelves of untested rape kits.

The legislation now moves to the full Senate for consideration.
