Kentucky's U.S. Senate candidates have disagreed over the federal government's role in the state's farming industry.

Republican U.S. Sen. Rand Paul and Democratic challenger Jim Gray both took questions from the Kentucky Farm Bureau board of directors on Thursday. Paul said he would work to repeal the Environmental Protection Agency's rule on waterways and wetlands, saying it was too burdensome for farmers. Gray said portions of the rule are necessary and said he would bring people together to discuss the issue.

The disagreement highlighted the two candidates' opposing philosophies of government, with Paul saying he would do everything he can to stop what he calls regulatory overreach while Gray said some level of regulatory influence is appropriate.

The candidates appeared separately, a change from past years when the board would question candidates together.
