Visitors to Paducah's Noble Park saw quite a site on Saturday: 6,000 rubber ducks floating on the park's pond.

It was part of the first-ever Paducky Derby, a fundraiser benefiting the Merryman House Domestic Crisis Center. The event was originally scheduled to take place at Paducah's riverfront, but high water forced it to be moved to the Noble Park pond.

Mary Foley, executive director for the Merryman House, says originally 5,000 ducks were ordered for the derby, but community response was so great that all the ducks were "adopted", and an additional 1,000 ducks were ordered.

A total of 30,000 dollars was raised through the duck adoption. Foley says there's more money coming in from sponsors which should put the final total over forty thousand dollars.

Those who adopted a duck were eligible to win cash prizes if their duck placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd as they floated in the pond. Wendy Watts of Kevil won the $2,500 first place prize. Doug Harris of Brookport, IL won the $1,000 second place prize. Julie Schreoder of Paducah won the $500 third place price, but opted instead to donate it back to the Merryman House.

The Merryman House Domestic Crisis Center serves eight counties and provides shelter and help for those suffering from domestic violence.
