The University of Kentucky board of trustees has approved a three-year contract extension and a pay raise for president Eli Capilouto.

The university announced Capilouto's base salary will increase to $790,000 per year from $535,000 per year. His contract, which was set to expire on June 30, 2018, has been extended to June 30, 2021.

In a news release, university officials say the board chose to increase Capilouto's salary after reviewing presidential salaries at other universities in the Southeastern Conference. The new contract means Capilouto will be eligible for the same raises all university staff members receive, but he will no longer get performance bonuses and a university-owned vehicle.

Board chairman Britt Brockman called Capilouto "the right leader at a pivotal moment for this special place."
