The Wickliffe Mounds state historic site and Columbus-Belmont State Park will join several Kentucky State Parks participating in National Public Lands Day on Saturday Sept. 27, to recognize the importance of parks and encourage volunteer work.

During last year’s celebration, volunteers in Kentucky and other states carried out projects such as removing trash, collecting invasive plants, building trails and planting trees.

Columbus-Belmont State Park will hold a “Trails and Trenches” Preservation Day.  Volunteers are needed to pick up trash, cut limbs and brush, and replace signs and fences. Work starts at 9 a.m. Sign-up will be at Shelter B. Bring rakes, grabbers and gloves. There will be free museum admission for all who participate. Call 270-677-2327.

At Wickliffe Mounds, free admission will be offered Sept. 27 to say thanks to the community. Volunteers will be able to clean the park and trails starting at 10 a.m. Please register to volunteer by calling the park at 270-335-3681. The park will have entertainment at 11 a.m.

Wickliffe Mounds will also celebrate Kentucky Archaeology Month. Kit Wessler, professor of archaeology from Murray State University, will present a program at 2 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

National Public Lands Day began in 1994 with three federal agencies and 700 volunteers. Last year, some 180,000 volunteers worked in every state. The purpose of this day is to keep the promise of the Civilian Conservation Corps alive and to preserve and protect America’s natural heritage.

“National Public Lands Day recognizes the significance of preserving our parks and the partnerships we have with friends groups, volunteers and other organizations,” Parks Commissioner Elaine Walker said. “The Kentucky State Parks appreciate the assistance we receive from our volunteers across the state.”
