According to Chief David Warner with the Mayfield-Graves County Fire and Rescue Squad, the fire broke out at around 6:30 am Friday. When firefighters arrived at the scene, flames were coming out of the roof of the transmitter building at the base of the transmitting tower for Willie and WNGO-FM.
Chief Engineer Greg Walker with the stations' owner, Bristol Broadcasting Company Paducah, tells West Kentucky Star it is not yet known when the stations will be back on the air at full power. WLLE-FM 102.1 is airing on "low power" for the time being utilizing a low powered transmitter at a different location based in Paducah. WNGO-FM remains off the air completely.
The nearly 500 foot tall tower adjacent to the transmitter building was not damaged in the fire, and poses no danger to the surrounding properties at the tower site near the Purchase Parkway / U.S. 45 interchange in Mayfield, according to Walker.
WNGO-AM 1320 remains unaffected and on the air. You can also click on the link below to stream the station.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
WLLE-FM is a 50,000 watt station that can be heard across western Kentucky. southern Illinois, and northwest Tennessee. It airs a Classic Country Music format.
WNGO-FM is an FM translator station for WNGO-AM 1320, and carries a News-Talk format along with its sister station, WKYX. Both stations cover western Kentucky and southern Illinois with their combined signals.
