Landmark Tower Coming Down at UT-Martin
By WestKyStar Staff
MARTIN, TN - A 320-foot communications tower, a University of Tennessee at Martin campus landmark for more than four decades, will come down Thursday in a scheduled demolition. The tower is located near the intersection of Moody and Hurt streets across from the university’s steam plant.

Preparation work by All State Tower of Henderson, Ky., will starts today, followed by the closing of the adjacent parking lot and street parking Wednesday. All work will proceed weather permitting.

A new communications tower, located just south of the old tower, was completed in 2011. The new tower and equipment building offer improved features, including updated tower lighting, backup emergency power and security.

The new tower and equipment building ensure that public safety communications equipment, WUTM-FM and WLJT-DT public television station can stay on the air during emergency situations or power outages. WUTM is the university’s student-operated radio station.
