William (Bill) Knight, 89, of Paducah, Ky. left his earthly body Sunday, March 31, 2013 at the McCracken County Nursing & Rehab Center.

He was born August 30, 1923, to the late Carrie Ann (Shaw) Knight and Milton Jewel Knight Sr. of Pottsville, Ky.

Being one of ten children, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Nancy Carolyn Knight, brothers, Milton Jewell Knight Jr., who died at Pearl Harbor, Dalton Knight, Bobby Knight, Jimmy Knight, Jimmy Knight, and sister, Lavette (Whalen) Knight. He is survived by one brother, Henry Knight, of St. Louis, Mo. and sisters, Jeanette (Bill) Monroe, Virginia Davis, and Lulu Katherine “Lu” Harvey, both of Paducah.

William (Bill) married Bonnie Sue (Frizzell) Knight, on August 29, 1942. In addition to his wife of 71 years, Bill is survived by a daughter, Margaret Ellen (Willie) Leonard, of Paducah, and son, Johnnie L. (Vicki) Knight, also of Paducah. Additional survivors include his four grandchildren, Russ Dowdy, of Lone Oak, Lara Dowdy Hill (Kerry) of Symsonia, Craig Dowdy,(Leigh) of the Ragland Community, and Billy Knight, of Houston, Texas, along with 8 great-grandchildren, Kathryn Ellen Grandstaff, Andrew Paul Grandstaff, Madelyn Mae Dowdy, Landon Dowdy, Carlye Dowdy, Mason Dowdy, Maggie Dowdy, and Jake Dowdy.

Bill was inducted into the U.S. Army on January 22, 1942 and became one of the elite force members of the newly formed 10th Mountain Division, Battalion A, 605th Field Artillery. This was the Division specially trained for harsh climate, mountain climbing, and snow skiing.

Bill achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant and earned many awards to include 2 Bronze Stars in the POE Valley Campaign in 1944.

William (Bill) was best known as a painting contractor and 30 plus years of basketball refereeing in the SEC, Ohio Valley, Missouri Valley, and regional school conference.

Bill was a sports enthusiast, quail, pheasant hunter, fisherman, 32 Degree Mason, receiving his 50 year pin, with the Plain City Masonic Lodge No. 449. He was also a Past Patron of the Clara Henrich Chapter 424 of the Eastern Star, and a member of the American Legion Post 31

Bill was also a member of the Concord United Methodist Church, where he had served as a deacon, elder, Sunday School Teacher, and choir member, and a former member of the Margaret Hank Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

A celebration of the life of William (Bill) M. Knight will take place at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, April 4, 2013 at the Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Paducah, with the Rev. Earl Dickerson officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in the Mt. Kenton Cemetery.

Friends may visit with the family from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at the Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Paducah, where Masonic Rites will be conducted at 7:00 p.m.
