The Supreme Judge has ruled. Our greatly respected and loved attorney Milton Moore Helm has won his case. He left his earthy home on Monday, November 27, 2017 at 11:57 p.m. and has joined his Heavenly family.

Milton was born October 3, 1923, in Metropolis, Illinois, to Roy R. and Mabel Moore Helm. He attended Metropolis Grade School and graduated from Metropolis Community High School in 1941, having competed on the high school basketball team for four years.

Milton attended the University of Illinois from 1941 to March 1943, and served in the United States Army from March 1943 until he was honorably discharged February 22, 1946, at Jefferson Barracks, in the St. Louis area. Milton served in Saipan as World War II ended. While in the army, he attended Baylor University, Waco, Texas. He was accepted at the University of Oklahoma Medical School for the 1945 term. He did not attend due to the ending of the war. Milton spent two summers driving a bus at Glacier National Park, Montana.

Milton graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.S. Degree in Accounting. He attended the University of Illinois Law School, earning his Law degree. He concurrently taught Business Law part-time in the U. of I. College of Commerce. Milton passed the Illinois Bar Exam and returned to Metropolis the same year to go into law practice with his father, who died in 1953.

Milton had several interests during his lifetime. He served as Director of the First National Bank from 1957-1973 and was President of the bank from 1961-1977. He joined the Metropolis Rotary Club in 1951, serving as President form 1958-1959. Milton also served as City Attorney in Metropolis for twenty-four years. He was secretary and treasurer of the Massac Building and Loan Association. Milton waited over ninety years to see his favored Chicago Cubs win the World Series in 2016.

Milton Helm married Janet Ackerman from St. Louis, Missouri, on Thanksgiving Day 1955. Milton and Janet gave holiday open-house parties for many years (1968-1981). At least two hundred people enjoyed the Helm hospitality between Christmas and New Year's. Milton and Janet were recognized as Duke and Duchess of Paducah, Kentucky. Janet passed away in 2002.

Milton Moore Helm leaves five nephews: Richard Helm, John R. Helm, Robert S. Helm, James L. Helm, James E. Mattson; one niece, Sue Ann Mattson; two cousins, Marilyn Helm Hadley and Jane Helm Maddock.
