Duane Irvin Hawes departed this earth on September 23, 2018 at his home in Benton, KY. Duane, 72, was born January 27, 1946 at Riverside Hospital in Paducah, Kentucky, the son of Glendal Elmore Hawes and Myrtie Jo Harper Hawes.  Duane spent most of his youth near the small community of Possum Trot.  He was raised by a loving, hardworking mother with the help of an extended family, neighbors, and friends. He graduated from North Marshall High School and attended both Paducah Community College and Murray State University.  Duane enlisted in the Naval Reserve while in high school and completed basic training between his junior and senior year.

Duane spent most of his working career at the Air Products plant site and retired in 2000 after 35 years of service.  The last 20 years he served as a Safety Specialist.  In this position he also served as Chief of a 60 plus member Fire and Rescue Squad.  He certified as an EMT in 1975 and became an Instructor in 1976.  He also became a State certified Firefighter and Fire Service Instructor.  During this time he has certified many responders and members of the public in CPR-AED-First Aid. After retiring from Air Products, he served Marshall County as Emergency Management Director for five years.  He was still serving as Assistant Fire Chief for the City of Benton at the time of his passing.  Duane was also a member Calvert City Masonic Lodge 543.

Duane is survived by the love of his life, wife Rita Lynn York Hawes.  Precious children and grands, son Brian Corey Hawes wife Melanie, daughter Dara Lynn Smith husband Daniel.  Grandchildren, Hunter and wife Marianne, Joselyn Thompson and husband Zak, Jackson Hawes, and Darcy Smith. Great granddaughters Layla Thompson and Lucy Thompson.  Siblings James (Tink) Hawes, Karen (Sissy) Wommack, Danny Joe Hawes, Nyla VanFleet, Dwight Owen Hawes, Glenn Weiss, Tracy Ellis, and Camilla Swope.

He is preceded in death by his parents, infant sons Jerry Duane and Michael Scott, sisters Gail Lewis and Lisa Bannister.
Collier Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.  The funeral will be held on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of the Collier Funeral Home.  Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at Collier Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be conducted by Brother Don Wilson and Brother Chris Young.

Burial will be in Fooks Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy are requested to be made to First Baptist Church of Benton, where he attended, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Fooks Cemetery or Lourdes Hospice.
