Joan (Jan) Bucy Cowan, 86, of Calvert City, KY, passed away Tuesday, November 26, 2019. Raised in Buchannan, Tennessee, she was preceded in death by her parents, John Brooks and Lottie Vivian Bucy and her brother, John Brooks Bucy.

She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Clifton Edsel Cowan, daughter Vivian Ann (Lanny) Blossom, son Clifton Mark (Cheri) Cowan, Lance B. (Nancy) Cowan, and grandchildren Matthew Buren Blossom, Jamie Todd Blossom, Jennifer Blossom Lindsey, Elise Catherine Cowan, Brooks Thomas Cowan, Andrew Cole Cowan and Logan Paul Cowan; great-grandchildren Alison Blossom Roberts, Brandon Blossom, Landon Lindsey, Elizabeth Lindsey, Presley Lindsey, Carson Blossom and Nate Blossom.

She was a longtime member of Briensburg Christian Fellowship, and worked as an Administrative Assistant at Calvert City Convalescent Center from 1972 until her retirement in 1995.

As a teenager, she was a standout basketball player for the Buchanan High School Lady Wildcats where she dreamed of one day being a forward just so she could shoot the ball.  She was legendary for her jump hook shot.

She and Cliff eloped just before Thanksgiving in 1951 while still students at Murray State University.  They told no one, however, living apart on campus until they worked up the courage to tell their parents several weeks later.  They even went to their separate family homes for Thanksgiving.

She was a positive thinker, greeting each day and every situation with optimism and hope. She played golf to spend time with her husband, was an enthusiastic piscator (as long as she had her lipstick on straight), loved cheering on her Murray State Racers and rallying behind the Kentucky Wildcats. She loved yard sales, antique stores and farmers markets.  She was an excellent cook, a master seamstress and a devoted mother, wife and homemaker. Anytime with her family became a special occasion, whether it be a Thanksgiving feast, a family birthday, sitting on her front porch watching the cars go by or gathering on the sidewalk of Fifth Avenue in Calvert City to celebrate the annual Fourth of July Parade and fireworks.

Always driven to a deeper spiritual relationship, as a young mother she attended First Baptist Church in Calvert City  every Sunday, carting her three young children along. She prayed fervently for her husband’s salvation, which the Lord honored in 1972.  The arc of her life and the fruit of it could be seen in the lives of the many who crossed her path. Her love of Christ was the bedrock and cornerstone that framed her days.

No meeting with Jan Cowan was complete without her telling stories, recounting blessings, sharing burdens and joys, and praising and thanking God. She was a spiritual compass to many, a dedicated encourager and a loyal prayer warrior to anyone who needed her. In the end, it can be said that hers was truly a life well lived.

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these. things shall be added unto you.” — Matthew 6:33
