Janice “Jan” Prince Poe

Janice “Jan” Prince Poe, 65, of Murray passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at her sister’s home in Murray, Kentucky.

She was born May 7, 1951 in Mayfield, Kentucky, grew up in the Cuba/Sedalia areas of Graves County, and moved to Calloway County/Murray at adulthood.  She was the youngest child born to R.L. and Jennie Prince.  She was valedictorian of the 1968  graduating class of Sedalia High School and then attended Murray State University.

Jan was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers Robert, Walter, Joe and Jerry.  She is survived by her son, Bradford Alan Stone, one granddaughter, Jenna Marie Stone, and three siblings, Judy (Roger) Williams of Murray , Van (Edda) Prince of Huntingdon, TN, and Ralph (Anne) Prince of Paducah, along with several nieces, nephews and cousins, and special friends Carlton Powers of Reidland, Darrell and Debbie Piper of Paducah, and Scott Francis of California.

Jan’s work experience included Purchasing at Murray State University, 30 years at Mattel/Fisher-Price as a scheduling manager, a site manager at Jakel corporate office in Murray, a jewelry sales clerk at JCPenney in Murray, and Wesco/Brucker Supply Compay, Pittsburg, PA as a site manager with area offices at Dana Corporation (Paris, McKenzie, and Humbolt, TN) and at Remington Arms (Mayfield, KY).

As an avid Kentucky basketball fan, Jan not only rooted for the Wildcats, but also enjoyed displaying her UK decor through her house and office.  Even much of her person attire consisted of UK jewelry and accessories.

Jan was a tremendous dancer.  Growing up it was rock n’ roll, but in her later life she began to enjoy county dancing as well as ballroom dancing.  Her love for dancing was radiant and resulted in not only teaching dance moves to many friends, but also in developing special friendships.  Her friends and acquaintances testify not only to her graceful dancing, but also to her inspiration of faith.

When Jan’s diagnosis was revealed, she vowed to maintain a positive image with all she met.  Whether it be at a doctor’s office for a visit, at a chemo unit for treatment, at church, a social gathering, or just time with family, she always praised God and testified about her faith.  A member of Grace Baptist Church in Murray, Jan has taught Sunday School, worked in VBS, WMU, and other church activities.

Jan was an amazing grandmother and known as “Nan” to her only granddaughter.  Her desire was to teach Jenna to be a loving and caring person and to love God.  In Jenna’s eyes, Jan truly lived up to the image of “You Are My Sunshine,” the song they sang to one another almost every time they were together.

Visitation will be held on Friday evening, February 24, 2017 from 5-8 pm at Imes Funeral Home, Murray and until the funeral hour at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 25, 2017.  Burial will follow at the Cuba Baptist Church Cemetery in Graves County.
