Mrs. Julia Kathryn James- Hall of Birmingham, Alabama, formerly of Hazel, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2015. She was 92.

Julia was born in Hazel, Kentucky on Feb. 5, 1923 to the late John and Larue Latimer. She was the oldest of seven children and grew up helping to take care of her younger brothers. After graduating from Puryear, TN High School, she attended Murray State Teacher’s College for a few semesters before leaving and becoming a secretary working at Ft Campbell, KY during WWII.

She had an abiding and resilient faith in Jesus Christ. As a young woman, she was a member of South Pleasant Grove Methodist Church (Hazel, KY) and later was a longtime member of Avondale United Methodist Church (Birmingham, AL) where she participated in her women’s circle for over 55 years, and served on various church committees.

Over the years, she worked for several different companies, mostly in sales or secretarial positions. In 1982, she retired from The Traveler’s Insurance Company.

Julia immensely enjoyed family activities, gardening, playing bridge, playing computer games, and was an avid reader. She also enjoyed cooking, and her family was especially fond of her crispy southern fried chicken and homemade pies. In the family, she was renowned for her Thanksgiving, and Easter dinners.

She is preceded in death by her first husband and her children’s father, Bill (nickname Mitch) James, her son Jack James, and her second husband, Billy J. Hall. Five of her brothers, James Ed, Will Moore, Ray, Richard, and Joseph Latimer also preceded her in death.

Survivors include her three sons and one daughter, George James (Sheila) of Hazel, KY,
Ronald James (Melinda) of Birmingham, AL, David James of Birmingham, AL and Carol James (Charles Wagner) of Cleveland, GA, and one brother Ralph Latimer (Barbara) of Puryear, TN. Her grandchildren are Les James, Carrie Lawson, Curtis James (fiancé Shandi Puckett), Mitch Lawson (Elisabeth), and Lindsay James Moats (Richard), and five great grandchildren.

The family gives special thanks and gratitude to her daytime caregivers Christina Alexander and her mother Dorothy Alexander of Birmingham. Tremendous thanks are also extended to Northeast Georgia Medical Center and its Hospice Care Unit.
