Litha Lavannia English Bass, 96, of Ledbetter, Kentucky passed away at 11:24 a.m. Sunday, July 24, 2016 at Baptist Health Paducah. Litha was born on April 16, 1920, to Herman Spurgeon English and Lottie Gillahan English. She began her career as a schoolteacher at the age of 18 in a one room schoolhouse. That career was interrupted when she went to work in factories in St. Louis and Detroit in support of America’s efforts in World War II. Her youngest son once referred to her as Rosie the Riveter, but Litha corrected him: “I inspected Rosie’s rivets”. In 1944, Litha enlisted in the United States Army Air Force, the predicessor to the U. S. Air force, where she trained pilots to fly bombers. The Air Force is also where she met her beloved husband, the late Robert Earl Bass. They married in 1945.

 

Litha returned to teaching in 1959 and retired from the Paducah Public School Symstem in 1985. She was a member of the Reidland Baptist Church and the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association. In retirement, Litha remained active. She bowled weekly until her late 80s, and she took tremendous pride in growing flowers and vegetables in her gardens. In April of this year,  she celebrated her 96th birthday at her Ledbetter home surrounded by loved ones.

 

She is deeply loved and missed by her family; sons, Robert Clark “Rock” Bass and wife Dara of Frankfort, Kentucky, Larry English Bass and wife Sue of Marrietta, Georgia, Bernard “Bernie” Bass and wife Betty of Paducah, Kentucky; grandchildren, Michael Bass, Carrie Bass, Larz Bass and wife Maria, Coral Bass and husband Jonathan Torkos, Elizabeth Bass and husband Garretson Epperly, Marty Bass and Laura Bass; great grandchildren, Lilly Bass and Maureena Torkos; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

 

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 27, 2016 at the Lone Oak Chapel of Milner & Orr Funeral Home with Rev. David Appold officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 28, 2016 at the Partlow Cemetery in Armstrong, Illnois.

 

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at the Lone Oak Chapel of Milner & Orr Funeral Home.
