Lucille Mahan, 101, a lifelong Livingston County resident, died peacefully in her home on January 6, 2019 with her family by her side.
Lucille was born at home near Hampton, KY to Dixon and Carmen (Threlkeld) May on September 16, 1917. She began teaching upon graduation from high school, travelling by horseback to her first teaching position at Pleasant Valley and other one room school houses. She later taught first grade at Salem Elementary, retiring in 1974 after 32 years of teaching. She fondly remembered many Livingston County residents as her students. She was a graduate of Murray State University with a degree in education.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Maurice Mahan, with whom she farmed outside Joy, KY, continuing the farm in his memory since 1984. She loved gardening, quilting and horseback riding and was devoted to her neighbors, her family, and her church family at Bethel United Methodist Church.
She is also preceded in death by her sister, Cornelia Riley and brother, Frank May.
Those left to remember her lovingly are her daughter Marcille (Jeff) Gordon of Dickson, TN; her granddaughters, Katie (Paul) Zimmerman-Clayton of Goodlettsville, TN; Beth (Bryce) Eichelberger of Joy, KY; Sarah (Pat) McKenzie of Nashville, TN; her great-grandchildren, James, Penny, Eli, Sam, Brendan, Noah, Aidan and Randall; her niece, Judy Riley and her nephews Neil (Vicky) Ramer and Billy (Linda) Ramer.
Funeral services will be at 2 pm, Friday, January 11, 2019 at Boyd Funeral Directors. Burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery.
Friends may gather from noon until the funeral hour, Friday, January 11, 2019 at the chapel of Boyd Funeral Directors in Salem, KY.
