Elsie Mildred Anderson Valentine

Elsie Mildred Valentine, a resident of Spring Creek Health Care in Murray, Ky., was born in Grassflat, Penn., and grew up in Clearfield, Penn., the daughter of the late Carl Albert Anderson and Agnes Thompson Anderson. She graduated from Clearfield High School and was employed by the Sylvania Electric Company where she played semi-professional basketball. She was trained as a governess and a childrens nurse and worked several years as a governess in Pittsburg, Penn., and on Long Island, N.Y. before taking a clerical post with the Director of the American Red Cross in New York City, N.Y. She married Cpt. William D. Valentine of the Red Cross on Dec. 26, 1943. Following the war, Mr. Valentine became an insurance agent, and then manager. The family moved eventually to Bowling Green, Ky., where Mrs. Valentine was active in civic affairs, serving as the president of Altrusa, the president of the Bowling Green High School Band Boosters, and a member of the Eastern Star. In 1970 she became owner of Valentine Insurance Service. She continued to be active in the community until she sold the business in 1975 when she and her husband retired to Fort Myers, Fla., and moved to Murray, Ky. in 2005. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Donald Valentine of Arbroath, Scotland. She is survived by four sons, Robert (Vicki Jo) of Paris, Tenn., Roger of Murray, Ky., Rex (Keiko) of San Francisco, Cal., and Richard (Becky) of Tequesta, Fla., three grandchildren: Sherrie Valentine-Wilfong (Brian) of Oxnard, Cal., Erik Valentine (Elisa Marie) of San Francisco, Hugh Valentine of Tequesta, Fla., and three great-grandchildren. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to either or both of two institutions: Playhouse in the Park, 701 Gil Hopson Dr., Murray, KY 42071, or First Presbyterian Church, 1601 Main Street, Murray, KY  42071.
