Mr. Archie R. Russell, age 93 of Calvert City, KY died on Monday, May 21, 2018, at Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, KY.

He was a member of Altona Baptist Church and was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was in the US Naval Armed Guard during WWII and served on two ships, the William Tilghman and the Ocean Chief. He was a 20MM Gunner on both ships. While on the WM Tilghman, he made the Invasion of Normandy, France in June of 1944. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his service in the invasion. Later he was transferred to the Pacific War. He made several of the islands, including Leyte Island in the Philippines and then on to Iwo Jima. He was there when the war ended. He loved his country and was willing to lay his life on the line for it.

Born Sunday, October 26, 1924 in Marshall County, KY, he was the son of the late WT Russell and the late Ollie (Russell) Stevenson.

Surviving are brothers, "Tinker" Thomas Stevenson of Calvert City, KY, Milton Stevenson of Calvert City, KY, Rudell Stevenson of Calvert City, KY, and James Stevenson of Calvert City, KY, sister, Francis Stevenson Brown of Calvert City, KY; and 2 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Betty Jean (Driver) Russell, sons, Larry Russell, Gary Russell and Randle Russell, daughter, Mary Elaine Russell, brothers, Edison "Doodle" Stevenson and Clifton Stevenson.

A Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at Collier Funeral Chapel located at 211 West 5th St. Benton, KY 42025 with Rev. Roger Rice officiating.

Interment with military rites will follow in Calvert City Cemetery, Calvert City, KY.

Visitation will be held between the hours of 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at Collier Funeral Home, Benton, KY.
