Three Murray State pitchers combined to allow just one run on six hits as the Breds put an end to a 13-game losing streak to Evansville with a 3-1 victory Wednesday afternoon at Reagan Field. The victory also gave the Purple Aces their first midweek defeat of the season.

Kyle Cornett (3-1) was impressive on the mound as he allowed just one run on four hits, three walks and four strikeouts over six innings.

The Purple Aces (20-13) got on the board in the third inning as Tim Bodine drew a one-out walk and went to second on an Eric Stamets bunt base hit. Jake Mahon drove in the runner from second with a single up the middle on the first pitch of the at-bat.

The Breds (17-17) got the run back in the home-half of the inning as Paul Ritzheimer singled through the left side with one out. Ty Stetson followed with a grounder to second, but Ritzheimer was running on the pitch and beat the throw to second. Brandon Elliott followed with a bunt base hit down the third-base line, before Travis Isaak delivered a sacrifice fly to center field.

MSU took its first lead of the game in the sixth as Isaak singled through the left side and went to third on a Jacob Rhodes double into the right-field corner. Mike Kozlowski drove in the runner with a sacrifice fly to left center.

UE threatened a rally in the top of the seventh as they put two runners on with no outs. MSU went to the bullpen to get Cameron Finch. Finch responded by getting a fielder’s choice on a sacrifice bunt attempt, a strikeout and a groundout to get out of the inning without allowing a run.

The Breds added an insurance run in the eighth as Kozlowski singled up the middle to start the inning and went to second on a groundout. Rick Linton drove in Kozlowski with a single through the right side.

Finch faced only six hitters in his two perfect innings of relief. Will Handlin (3) earned the save after allowing two hits in his one inning of work.

Ryan Billo (5-1) took the loss after giving up two runs on eight hits over 6.1 innings.

Elliott and Kozlowski each collected two hits as eight of the nine hitters in the lineup collected at least one hit.

The Breds return to action Friday evening as they begin a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series at Austin Peay. The series gets underway at 6 pm.
