Murray State men's basketball coach Matt McMahon announced the signing of 6-1 guard Byron Hawkins.

Hawkins, out of Ft. Washington, Maryland, joins the Racers from Towson University where he played his freshman and sophomore seasons. He'll sit out the coming 2016-17 season and then have two years to play for the Racers.

"Byron is a proven scorer at the Division-I level and comes to Murray State from a winning program," McMahon said. "He's looking forward to taking advantage of his sit out year in our player development program and I expect Byron to make an immediate impact on our 2017-18 team."

In 2015-16, Hawkins started 30 of the Tigers' 31 games and was second on the team in scoring 13.2 points per game which ranked him 12th in the Colonial Athletic Conference. He recorded 67 assists against only 36 turnovers, made 56 3-point baskets, and was 77 percent from the free throw line.

Last season against Ole Miss, Hawkins hit 7-of-10 from the 3-point line for a 28-point night that also included five assists. He also scored 24 points against Bradley and finished with 23 points against Drexel.

Hawkins joins the Racers this summer after scoring 614 points and making 81 3-point field goals in two seasons at Towson.
