Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich has approached Cardinals football coach Bobby Petrino about a contract extension.

Petrino is 17-9 after two seasons in his second stint with the Cardinals, whom he led to a 41-9 mark from 2003-06. He received a seven-year, $24.5 million contract upon his January 2014 hiring, but Jurich said Thursday the coach has merited an extension.

Jurich says Petrino has "earned it, and I want to keep him here for as long as he'll stay," though the AD didn't specify terms during a news conference updating plans to expand Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.

The AD has set a goal of September 2019 to complete the project that will increase seating capacity to 65,000. Jurich said $8 million has been pledged toward the $55 million campaign.
