Mid-Continent University Interim Head Baseball coach Tyler Owen has signed his first four players for the 2014 campaign, and among them are the program’s second legacy player – following in the footsteps of his older brother. The Cougars have gotten commitments from Preston Blair – the younger brother of 2013 senior Joseph Blair – Steven Hulsey, J.C. Chapman, and Brent Gilbert so far this summer for the 2014 season.

Blair, 5’10” outfielder from Batesville, Miss., comes to Mid-Continent on the heels of his brother’s time as a Cougar. Preston prepped at South Panola High School, hitting .345 as a senior. He belted a pair of doubles, scored 11 runs and drove in 16 as well for the Tigers, helping lead them to runner-up finish in District 4 of the MHSAA. Blair also struck out just eight times in 58 at bats on the season.

Hulsey, a 5’9” catcher and first baseman from Paducah, Ky., joins the Cougars after having completed his prep career for coach Geno Smith at Lone Oak High School. He joins former Purple Flash teammates Jack Coleman and Michael Edwards on the Cougars 2014 roster, after helping to lead the Purple Flash to four consecutive District Two titles.

Chapman, a 5’11” left-handed pitcher from Cobden, Ill., comes to the Cougars after starring in two sports at Cobden High School. Chapman earned MVP honors in basketball twice, and was named the baseball team’s MVP as a senior, also claiming the Appleknockers’ All-Around Athlete award as a senior. On the mound as a senior, Chapman posted a 7-1 record with a 1.56 ERA, striking out 92 batters and walking only 27 in 63 innings. At the plate, he hit .330 with 12 RBIs in 88 at bats.

Gilbert, a 6’0” sophomore Utility Player from Sharon, Tenn., transfers to Mid-Continent after playing his freshman season at Shawnee Community College. While at Shawnee, Gilbert earned the Fighting Saints’ Vice-President Award, adding to his high school achievements of being named All-District as a junior in High School and earning his team’s offensive player of the year award as a senior.
