EUGENE, OR - Murray State sprinter Alexis Love ran for the first time at the USA Olympic Track & Field Trails Friday and successfully advanced to the semifinals of the 100 meter run with a time of 11.49 at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon.
The junior from Palmetto, FL, makes a step closer to making the USA Olympic team and will run Saturday in the semifinals at 5:40 pm and then at 7:52 pm if she can make the final.
Love was third place in the third heat just behind second place Chelsea Hayes (Louisiana Tech) at 11.44 and first place Carmelita Jeter (Saucony) at 11.20.
“I was so excited to get to Oregon and then run in this race,”Love said. “I thought I ran well and I was really happy to see that I had made the top-3 and qualified for the semifinals. It means a lot to be here and to have the chance to represent our country in the Olympics and it is exciting to represent Murray State.”
“I am so excited for Alexis,” MSU Track & Field Head Coach Jenny Severns said. “She has been working so hard and it’s paying off. She worked hard to get to this point and is taking advantage of the opportunity and we’re all proud of her. I couldn’t be happier.”
Love, perhaps saving some juice for the semifinals, ran a steady race and was off her best time this spring of 11.28 that she had in the finals of the Ohio Valley Conference Championship in May. Her run was similar to the 11.47 she recently ran in the NCAA Regional in qualifying in Jacksonville, FL.
18 women advanced to the semis with the top-3 from each of the four heats plus the next six best times on a night when runners had to navigate light rain and 58-degree temperatures.
Today’s first run in Eugene is only the beginning for the OVC Female Track Athlete of the Year, the Racer sprinter is also set to make a run to the London Summer Olympics when she competes in the 200 meter event. Love’s entry will start next week Thursday (June 28) in the first round at 8:45 pm. The semifinals happen at 5 pm (June 29) with the finals coming (June 30) at 8:50 pm.
NBC and NBC Sports Network are showing 12 hours of coverage at the USA Olympic Trials over the eight days of the meet.
Love’s heat and lane assignments for the 100 semifinals and 200 prelims will be posted later at the home of USA Track & Field at: tracktown12.gotracktownusa.com.
