Coming off a weekend that saw the Mid-Continent University soccer team drop a pair of 2-1 decisions, the Cougars and coach Hannibal Najjar knew how important it would be to get off to a fast start in their American Midwest Conference debut on Wednesday afternoon. That is exactly what the Cougars did on Wednesday afternoon.

Keagan Bacchus tallied a first half goal, and Jack Hutton found the back of the net in the second frame, while Adam Lewis earned his first shutout of the season as the Cougars (2-3, 1-0) blanked the Bulldogs of Benedictine University-Springfield (0-1-1, 0-1), 2-0.

Mid-Continent generated three good chances early in the match, and in the 14th minuet, Bacchus broke the ice. Henan Alheiros sent a long-ball past the Bulldogs' defenders, and Bacchus converted a one-on-one chance against keeper Jourdan Greene to give Mid-Continent the early 1-0 lead. In the 35th minute, Benedictine got their best goal scoring chance of the match, when Pedro Parra rang an attempt off the left post that stayed out of the goal, and Mid-Continent took the 1-0 lead into the break.

Mid-Continent came out aggressively in the second half, continuing to generate chances, and in the 64th minute Jack Hutton cashed in a mad scramble in front of the goal, pushing the Cougars' edge to 2-0. That proved to be more than enough, as the Cougars cruised in with the 2-0 win.

Lewis (2-3) earned the shutout, making three saves in the process of earning his fifth career clean sheet. The goal from Bacchus was his third of the season, and he picked up an assist on Hutton's tally, while Hutton and Alheiros found their names on the scoresheet for the first time in 2013.

The Cougars will be back in action on Tuesday, September 10, when they head east to St. Catherine, Ky. to take on the Patriots of St. Catherine College (0-2). The match is scheduled to kick-off at 1 pm CDT.
