Murray State officially opened the 2014 season Friday morning with their first practice at Stewart Stadium.  The practice was the first of two required practices in helmets.  MSU will hold its second practice in helmets Saturday morning at 8 a.m.

The Racers hit the ground running with an up-tempo practice that lasted a little under two hours.  The practice consisted of individual periods, team periods and special teams.  Like always, practice concluded with the bandit period.

“It was a good day,” said fifth-year head coach Chris Hatcher.  “We have a lot of young guys that just showed up, and trying to get them to go at the pace and urgency that we expect out of those guys was a bit of a challenge.  We did a whole lot of meeting yesterday and this is just a whole different world for a high school freshman when he steps onto a college campus.”

There will be plenty of competition throughout camp as position battles are going on at every position.  The most notable position battles are at quarterback, running back, wide receiver and in the secondary.

The goal of this preseason camp is to get the team into peak shape for the season opener against Union on Aug. 28.

“We don’t do two-a-days, said Hatcher.  “We just practice once a day and do a little jog thru at night to prepare them for the next practice.  We come out in the morning and they have plenty of time to recover.  We don’t practice very long, so when you do that over the course of 17 practices during camp, you tend to be pretty fresh when camp is over with.”
