Southern Illinois University Director of Athletics Tommy Bell announced today that following a comprehensive review of the football program, head coach Dale Lennon has been dismissed.

Lennon, who took over the program after Jerry Kill left for Northern Illinois following the 2007 season, compiled a 51-42 record in eight seasons at SIU, including a 36-28 mark in Missouri Valley Football Conference games. His first two teams advanced to the playoffs and were 15-1 in league play. During his final six seasons, Southern did not make the playoffs and was 21-27 in MVFC games. In 2015, the Salukis finished 3-8 overall and 2-6 in conference play.

“On behalf of the University, I would like to thank Coach Lennon and his staff for their service to our institution,” Bell said. “Dale and his staff directed the program with class and integrity. After a great deal of thought and consultation, I determined it was time for a change in the leadership of our football program.”

Under the terms of Lennon’s contract, which paid him an annual salary of $220,788, he will receive a $55,000 buyout. Bell said a search for Lennon’s replacement will begin immediately, and he will conduct a press briefing on Tuesday at 3 p.m. to discuss the future of the football program.
