D’Mauriae VanCleave rushed 10 times for 103 yards and two touchdowns, caught five passes for 42 yards and one TD, returned a punt for a TD and had two interceptions as Danville beat Mayfield 35-21 in Saturday's Class 2A Russell Athletic/KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl championship game at Kroger Field.

The Admirals scored on their first possession and led 21-8 at halftime. VanCleave put the game away when he returned a Mayfield punt 60 yards for a touchdown, giving Danville a 28-8 lead with 5:23 left in the third quarter.

It was the 11th state title and first since 2003 for the Admirals, who finished with a 15-0 record.

Mayfield quarterback Jaden Stinson finished 19 of 32 for 250 yards and two touchdowns but also was intercepted three times as the Cardinals (13-2) finished with four turnovers. Mayfield’s Jordan Harrison had six catches for 130 yards and a touchdown.

The Cardinals, who are now 0-5 against Danville in state championship games, managed only 76 rushing yards.
