Mayfield High School is mourning the loss of its long-time soccer coach. Walter Mojsjenko passed away at his home Wednesday night at the age of 57.

“Coach Mo”, as he was known, had coached the boys soccer team at MHS since 2005. He also coached the MHS girls soccer team in 2006.

Kim Hamby, Public Relations Director at Mayfield High School, released the following statement:

Profound sadness filled the halls of Mayfield High School today at the loss of faculty member and Mayfield High School boys’ soccer coach, Walter Mojsejenko.  “Coach Mo”, 57, joined the staff in 2005. He was a not only a science teacher and soccer coach, he was a beloved friend and mentor.  He also served as sponsor of the Sportsman’s Club and the Chess and Gaming Club at Mayfield High School.

Students received the news during first period from their classroom teachers.  While counselors and clergy were on hand for students as needed, it was mainly students and staff who counseled and consoled each other.  Students filled the commons of the high school for a prayer circle as they searched for understanding. While classes met, the well-being of students and faculty took precedence and led the direction of each class.

Coach Mo will be greatly missed.

Prior to Mayfield, Coach Mo also had coaching stints at Owensboro Apollo and Owensboro Catholic. As a player, Coach Mo was part of the 1979 state championship team at Louisville Ballard.
