With district play starting around the state Friday night, few district wins had the magnitude of McCracken County’s 55-43 win over Class 6A District 1 preseason favorite Daviess County.

The Mustangs (2-4, 1-0) struck first when Daviess County fumbled on the opening drive and gave McCracken the ball on the 28 yard line. Seven plays later, sophomore Hunter Bradley punched it in from 2 yards out to give the Mustangs a 7-0 lead.

The rest of the opening quarter belonged to Daviess County (3-3, 0-1).  The Panthers reeled off 22 unanswered points to give them a 22-7 lead after the 1st quarter.

Then the Mustangs took over.  From that point on, the Mustangs outscored the Panthers 48-21 over the remaining three quarters, including a 21-0 stretch in the 3rd quarter.

McCracken County Senior Kiael Waldon put an exclamation point on the game in the 4th quarter when he dragged several Panthers with him for a 30 yard touchdown to give the Mustangs a 55-35 lead.

Sophomore running back Hunter Bradley carried the ground game for the Mustangs Friday night with 153 yards on 29 carries and 3 touchdowns.  McCracken Junior Elijah Wheat passed for 119 yards on 11 completions and 3 touchdowns, 2 of which were to Senior Alex Miezio

The Mustangs travel to Ohio County next Friday night to take on the Eagles at 7 pm.

The  Mayfield Cardinals continued their winning ways Friday night as the Cardinals upended the previously undefeated  Corbin Redhounds 45-21.

Mayfield (6-0) struck first early in the 1st quarter as Jayden Stinson found Alonzo Daniel for a 32 yard touchdown pass to give the Cardinals a 7-0 lead. On the ensuing kickoff, Corbin's Treyveon Longmire scampered 95 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 7.

After stopping Corbin (5-1) in a big offensive series, Mayfield responded quickly with a go-ahead score as Kent Trey Matthews scored on a 30 yard touchdown run to give the Cardinals a 13-7 lead with 3:27 left in the 2nd quarter. Just two minutes later, Matthews struck again, this time from 1 yard out to give the Cardinals a 20-7 lead at halftime.

The second half was all Mayfield. Stinson started the scoring with a 63 yard strike to Diaz Perry to give the Cards a 27-7 lead. Connor Guthrie would come in at quarterback for a portion of the fourth quarter and immediately contributed with a 35-yard scamper for a touchdown to give the Cardinals a 38-14 lead. Then Kent Trey Matthews put the game on ice with his third touchdown of the game, this time from 17 yards out.

Mayfield plays at longtime rival Murray High next Friday at 7pm.

Paducah Tilghman got off to a great start this regular season, but the start of the district season was a bit of a different story as the Caldwell County Tigers continue their unbeaten streak against the Tornado since moving to the same district, winning 37-22 in Tornado Alley.

The Tigers found the end zone on their opening drive of the game when Joby Jaggers connected with Oliver Parker for a 32 yard touchdown to give Caldwell the early 7-0 lead. After a series of punts and a quarter change, the Jaggers-Parker connection was alive and well again. This time, Jaggers found Parker for a 30-yard touchdown to give Caldwell a 14-0 lead with 8:51 in the 2nd quarter.

Just before halftime, Tilghman (4-2, 0-1) had a big 4th-and-goal at the 1 yard line and Makel Askew marched it in for the touchdown, trimming the Caldwell lead down to 14-7. However, Caldwell (4-2, 1-0) was not finished for the half as a strong kickoff return set the Tigers up at midfield. After getting to the 11 yard line, Barret Schultz connected on a 28 yard field goal to give the Tigers a 17-7 halftime lead.

Tilghman came out strong on the opening drive of the 2nd half. Damien Ford got his first touchdown of the game on a 13 yard carry to cut the Caldwell lead to 17-14 with just under 8 minutes left in the 3rd. Just over a minute later, Caldwell would respond as Joby Jaggers connected on his 3rd touchdown pass of the game, this time from 15 yards out to give Caldwell the 27-17 lead. Jaggers would strike one more time, this time on a 6-yard touchdown pass for his fourth touchdown pass of the night, giving Caldwell all the cushion they would need with a 31-14 lead.

Paducah Tilghman will travel to Cadiz next Friday night to take on Trigg County at 7pm, while Caldwell County will host Union County at 7pm.
