MSU's Newcomb in 4-way Tie for State Amateur Lead

SIMPSONVILLE, KY - Murray State’s Patrick Newcomb, of Benton, KY, fired a 3-under par 68 in Tuesday’s opening round of the Kentucky State Amateur golf tournament at the Cardinal Club in Simpsonville. That puts Newcomb, the defending champion, in a four-way tie for first with Morehead State’s Jared Flanery, UNC-Charlotte’s Tyler Mitchell, of Cadiz, KY and Eastern Kentucky’s Taylor Riggs.

Hunter Frazier and Hunter Stewart opened with 69s, as did Tyler McDaniel. Tyler Sharpe and Joseph Barr both carded 70s. Danny Bishop and Hays Featherton each shot 71s.

Murray State golfers Chris Griffin and Josh Rhodes both shot 76s. Travis Thompson shot 77, Hunter York 78, Jared Gosser 82 and Daniel Harper an 86.

The 54-hole tournament continues Wednesday and concludes on Thursday.
