Newcomb Takes 2-shot Lead into Final Round

SIMPSONVILLE, KY - Patrick Newcomb is 18 holes of golf away from repeating as champion at the Kentucky State Amateur golf tournament. The Benton, KY native and senior-to-be at Murray State University shot a 4-under 67 (135) Wednesday, taking a two-shot lead into today’s final round at the Cardinal Club.

Clay County High School sophomore-to-be Tyler McDaniel is two shots behind Newcomb after firing a 69 (137) Wednesday.

Taylor Riggs, a sophomore at Eastern Kentucky University, and Tyler Mitchell, of Cadiz, KY, are tied for third at 68-71 (139).

Newcomb is trying to become the 10th player to win back-to-back State Amateur titles.

Current Racer Hunter York made the cut for today’s final round after firing a 72 Wednesday (150). Former Racers Kyle Shirley (145) and Chris Griffin (146) also made the cut.

Current Racers Jared Gosser (154), Josh Rhodes (156), Travis Thompson (158), Preston French (164), and Daniel Harper (167) missed the cut.
