The St. Louis Cardinals have fired Manager Mike Matheny and both of his hitting coaches.

In a press release, Cardinals' Chairman and CEO Bill DeWitt, Jr., said, "Mike Matheny has served the St. Louis Cardinals organization with tremendous dedication and pride and I am thankful for his service to the Cardinals over the past six and half seasons. On behalf of the entire Cardinals organization, I would like to with Mike the very best."

The release also says hitting coaches John Mabry and Bill Mueller have been relieved of their duties.

Matheny's record as the 49th manager of the Cardinals is 591-473, ranking him 5th on the all-time list for the team. They played post-season baseball in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, including winning the NL championship in 2013.

Bench Coach Mike Shildt has been named as Interim Manager. He has been with the Cardinals organization since 2004 and has been a major league coach in the past two seasons. He managed eight years in the minor league system.  

A press conference is scheduled for 11 am Sunday in St. Louis.
