Lake Barkley Traffic Shifts to New Bridge
By West Kentucky Star Staff
CANTON, KY - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says two-lane traffic on U.S. 68/KY 80 has moved to the new Lake Barkley Bridge.

The traffic shift happened about 1:30 pm. Crews intended to move the traffic about noon, but waited a bit longer to allow fresh striping on the new road surface to dry.

Shifting traffic to the new bridge now allows engineers to begin removing concrete from the old bridge and set a schedule for demolition of the steel bridge structure with explosives. That is expected to take place in late March or in April.

The U.S. Coast Guard has requested that the main spans of the existing bridge be removed as quickly as possible once two-way traffic is moved to the new structure.

Construction of a multi-use path, painting of the main arch steel, and other finish work is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
