The Mayfield Cardinals are headed to the state tournament for the first time in 27 years. Tournament MVP Kade Neely scored 14 points and grabbed 5 rebounds as Mayfield knocked off McCracken County 56-44 in the First Region championship game Sunday afternoon at the CFSB Center.
It's the Cardinals' first regional title since 1992, and Mayfield Coach Chris Guhy, who announced before the season started that this would be his last, will be making his first trip to the state tournament as a head coach.
After trailing 8-4 at the end of the 1st quarter, the Cardinals used a 14-6 second quarter run to take an 18-14 halftime lead. Leading 32-29, the Cardinals started the 4th quarter on a 10-3 run to build a 10 point lead. The run was helped along by the early exit of McCracken County's star player Jackson Sivills, who fouled out early in the quarter, allowing the Cardinals to pull away.
Brothers Carson and Connor Guthrie each scored 13 points for Mayfield. Kent Trey Matthews finished with 12.
Trevor Winsett led the Mustangs with 14 points. Sivills finished with 11 points, and Gavin Beyer finished with 10.
The Cardinals will play Warren Central Thursday at 7:00 pm central time in the first round of the boys state tournament at Rupp Arena in Lexington.
