A Cadiz woman entered into a plea agreement after being charged with breaking into the home of the Trigg County Sheriff.

Crystal Smith was arrested by Cadiz Police in January of 2022 at the home of Trigg County Sheriff Aaron Acree. Smith was originally charged with burglary, possession of stolen property, and possession of heroin.

Smith entered a guilty plea to an amended charge of third-degree burglary, which is a class D felony punishable by up to 5 years in prison. The agreement with the court and special prosecutor Dan Boaz will see Smith get 25 months of probation.

According to WKDZ, Smith told Trigg County Circuit Court Judge Natalie White that her decision-making was impaired following the 2021 death of her son. She said she wanted to put this matter behind her.

Smith, though, still has a federal lawsuit against Acree and Trigg County Jailer James Hughes. She claims Acree and Hughes violated her Fourth Amendment rights protecting her from unreasonable search and seizure plus use of excessive force, in addition to her Eighth Amendment rights protecting her from Cruel and unusual punishment. Smith accuses Acree of civil battery and civil assault. Hughes is accused of false imprisonment. Both men are accused of intentionally inflicting emotional distress.

Meanwhile, Acree is under indictment on a series of misdemeanor charges, some of which are related to Smith. Acree is accused of official misconduct, assault, and terroristic threatening after the alleged altercation with Smith in January of 2022 after she was arrested and charged with burglarizing Acree's home. He is also accused of official misconduct after allegedly booking a room at Lake Barkley State Resort Park for free as a part of a drug operation when it was actually for personal use.

Acree is set for a jury trial on November 30th.
