With a new fiscal court set to be sworn in in January, Marshall County commissioners tabled the discussion over the E911 pay scale at Tuesday's meeting.

There was initially a motion to accept the pay scale in order to begin discussions, which was followed by a long pause before any real talks began.

That's when Commissioner Monti Collins said the pay scale needs to be addressed, but only if it's addressed in other departments as well.

"I don't disagree that this is something we need to look at," Collins said. "But I also don't believe it is something that only this department needs to be addressed. There are probably other departments that need to be addressed as to whether we need to do the same for them."

Collins went on to say he believes that discussion should happen with the next fiscal court.

Commissioner Justin Lamb, who lost his bid for re-election during the primary election, also believes the new court should take up the issue.

Outgoing Judge Executive Kevin Neal told the court it's his belief that the current pay is one major factor in retaining and hiring people in the E911 department.

Neal said, "we are seeing and hearing from our supervisors in that agency that at the rate of pay we have set currently, bringing people in is a challenge."

Neal added if the court wants to wait it won't change anything, but one thing that concerned him along with the pay was the burnout in the agency.
