Cairo sites added to National Underground Railroad Network

Two southern Illinois sites have been added to the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.

Illinois governor JB Pritzker announced the Allison Family Homesite and the Contraband Camp, both located in Cairo, are on the list.

The National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom aims to preserve the history of resistance to slavery.

The two new sites are among more than 700 sites in 39 states.
