As of Friday, Illinois state sales tax on eligible items is reduced from 6.25% to 1.25%. The reduction will remain in effect through Sunday, August 14. Other local taxes will still apply.
A long list of items are eligible covering school supplies, clothing, footwear and other accessories. Clothing items and shoes must cost less than $125 to be eligible. Items not eligible include sporting goods, electronics and art supplies. A complete list is linked below.
The Illinois state legislature included the sales tax holiday in this year's $46 billion budget as of July 1.
This is a tax-free weekend in Missouri for back-to-school shoppers.
Over the past ten years, Kentucky's General Assembly has discussed similar legislation but has never approved a tax-free weekend.
