A statewide advisory from Attorney General Daniel Cameron was released, this afternoon, to give guidance on Kentucky's trigger law.

The advisory explains that the Human Life Protection Act, passed on a bipartisan vote by the General Assembly in 2019, is now law in Kentucky. The law took effect, today, with the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in the case of Dobbs v Jackson Women's Health.

Kentucky's Human Life Protection Act states that an individual may not aid or knowingly cause the "termination of the life of an unborn human being." According to statute, the performance of a prohibited abortion is now a felony, but the mother is not subject to criminal liability.

The only exception is if a doctor deems it necessary to protect the life of the mother.

The ruling turned the issue of abortion and its regulation over to individual states.
