The House of Representatives passed a short-term spending bill on Saturday, avoiding a government shutdown if it's passed in the Senate.

It was a rare moment of bipartisanship after the continuing resolution passed 335-91.

The fiscal year concludes at midnight Sunday, but the resolution puts funding in place for an additional 45 days. The bill also includes $16 billion for U.S. disaster relief.

House Republicans had tried and failed to pass a seperate stopgap funding bill that contained items like border security and spending cuts.

McCarthy said he did not want to punish military service members or border agents for the House's failure to pass a budget that ends wasteful spending and addresses border security. "We need more time to get the job done," McCarthy told reporters.

Republicans' previous proposals did not get Democratic support, and GOP hardliners also opposed them. They wanted to keep the House GOP majority's promise to pass 12 individual spending bills in the next fiscal year that include spending cuts.
