Powerball players in Missouri and Texas won the nearly $1.8 billion jackpot on Saturday, overcoming astronomical odds to end the lottery game’s three-month drought without a big winner.
The winning ticket in Texas was sold at a gas station-convenience store in Fredericksburg, according to the Texas Lottery.
According to the Missouri Lottery, the winning ticket was bought at a QuikTrip store in St. Louis.
The $893.5 million prize is the highest jackpot prize won in Missouri to date,” said Executive Director Lester Elder. “It exceeds the previous record of $293.7 million from a Powerball drawing held in November 2012.”
The winner has until March 5 to claim the prize.
The identity of the Missouri winner may remain a mystery, as the state has a law that grants anonymity to lottery winners.
A law that took effect in 2021 prohibits the publishing of names, addresses or other identifying information of lottery winners.
The $1.787 billion prize, which was the second-largest U.S. lottery jackpot in history, followed 41 consecutive drawings in which no one matched all six numbers. The last drawing with a jackpot winner happened May 31.
Powerball’s terrible odds of 1 in 292.2 million are designed to generate big jackpots, with prizes growing as they roll over when no one wins.
Each ticket holder will have the choice between an annuitized prize of $893.5 million or a lump sum payment of $410.3 million. Both prize options are before taxes.
