Ms. Norma Jean Ross, age 95 of Hardin, Kentucky, passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at Anna Mae Owen Hospice House in Murray, Kentucky. After receiving her Master’s degree from Murray State University, she devoted 30 years to the Marshall County School System as a teacher and librarian. She then continued her dedication to service by working in the Kentucky Economic Development office, where she advocated for Western Kentucky for over 10 years. She also served as a Kentucky Democratic delegate at three National Democratic Conventions.
Outside of her career and community service, Jean especially loved traveling. She led multiple Marshall County study-abroad trips, giving local high school students the opportunity to experience and learn about other countries around the world.
Her love for Western Kentucky began as a young woman at Kentucky Lake, where she developed lifelong passions for waterskiing, traveling, fishing, and camping. In retirement, she also enjoyed reading, playing cards, and spending time with her family.
Born January 31, 1931, in Calloway County, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Toy Jones and the late Lola (Burkeen) Jones. She was the oldest of the three daughters and preceded in death by her sisters, Anne Siress and Barbara McKendree.
Surviving are daughters: Cara Gwen Mathis of Murray, KY, Ramona Jan Ross-Howard of Seffner, FL; daughter-in-law: Gina Ross; grandchildren: Kristin Mathis, Amy Redden, Noah Ross, Ethan Ross, Casey Ross, and Colynn Ross-Howard; 12 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Roy Junior Ross; daughter, Patricia Dianne Redden; son, Terry Lynn Ross; and son-in-laws, James Curtis Mathis and Dwain Redden.
A celebration honoring her life will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, May 8, 2026, at Brooks Chapel Community Church, 2411 Brooks Chapel Road, Dexter, KY, with Bro. Brian Parr and Bro.
