Vernon Raymond Koym, Jr.
August 17, 1951 – January 16, 2026

Vernon Raymond Koym, Jr., a man of profound faith, quiet strength, and unwavering devotion, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2026. He was 74 years old.

A Legacy of Love and Family
Born on August 17, 1951, to the late Vernon Koym, Sr. and Elaine McMullen, Ray’s life was defined by the deep roots he planted and the family he nurtured. He shared over 53 beautiful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Daria Starks Koym. Their journey together began at Texas A&M University, where they met and laid the foundation for a lifetime of love. Ray was a proud graduate and a dedicated member of the Corps of Cadets, carrying the values of discipline and honor with him forever.

Ray was a devoted father and grandfather, leaving behind a rich family legacy:

Daughter Jamen and her husband, Daniel, along with their children: Evalynn, Samantha, Gabriel, and Caleb.

Daughter Lara and her late husband, Charlie, along with their children: Allison (husband Baylen, who are expecting PawPaw’s great-granddaughter, Charlie), Cole, and Luke.

Daughter Gabrielle and her husband, Kenny, along with their son, Kade.

He was also a beloved son-in-law, having shared a close and meaningful bond with his wife's parents, Kenneth and the late Evalyn Starks.

A Life of Service and Adventure
Ray’s impact on the world was felt both globally and locally. Following his time in the Corps, he served with distinction as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force, dedicating years of his life to the defense of his country. Upon returning to civilian life, he served with the Department of Defense and remained a pillar of his community in Benton, serving the church in many capacities with a humble and gentle heart.

Beyond his formal service, Ray found great joy in the world around him. He was a lifelong, "Gig 'em" shouting supporter of the Texas A&M Aggies. An outdoorsman at heart, he found peace while hiking in the mountains and enjoyed traveling with Daria. An avid reader, he was rarely without a book, most often the Bible, constantly seeking knowledge and quiet reflection.

Above all else, Ray’s favorite way to spend time was simply enjoying his family. Whether at a crowded holiday table or a quiet afternoon with his grandchildren, he showed God’s love through his presence and his kindness. He was a humble and gentle man who made the world a better place by simply being in it.

Services will be held on Thursday, January 22nd with a visitation from 11-1 followed by a celebration of life at 1PM at Collier’s Funeral Home in Benton, KY.

"Well done, good and faithful servant."

But those who die in the Lord will live; their bodies will rise again!

Those who sleep in the earth will rise up and sing for joy!

For your life-giving light will fall like dew on your people in the place of the dead!
