Don Thompson, 84, of Benton, Kentucky, passed away on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at his place of residence.
Don was born on March 10, 1942, to the late Hoy and Chloe Lyles Thompson, in Marshall County, Kentucky. He spent a meaningful part of his working life at the General Tire Plant, where he worked in the tire room. His years there reflected the kind of man he was, one who understood the value of hard work, loyalty, and showing up each day.
Outside of work, Don enjoyed the simple pleasures that made life rich and memorable. He loved watching westerns and appreciated the familiar stories and timeless spirit of those films and television shows. He also enjoyed spending time at the casino, where he found entertainment, excitement, and good food. One of his most distinctive interests was his love of owls and the catchphrase, “I’m smarter than a tree full of owls.”
He especially cherished time spent watching his great-grandson at sporting events. He took great pride in being there and was sure to make it even when feeling under the weather. These moments and family time in general meant a great deal to him and reflected the deep love he had for his family. He found joy in supporting the people he cared about and in celebrating their accomplishments, big and small. He was also a sports fan, and his enthusiasm for college basketball and pro football added to the many ways he stayed connected to the world around him and enjoyed the thrill of competition.
Don is survived by one daughter, Angela Alexander of California; one brother, Ted Thompson, of Cadiz, Kentucky; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Victoria Alonzo Thompson; one daughter, Kimberly Carol Phelps; one brother, William Thompson; and his parents, Hoy and Chloe Lyles Thompson.
Visitation will be from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, at the Life Celebration Center of Filbeck-Cann, 1003 Poplar Street, Benton, KY 42025.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, at the Life Celebration Center of Filbeck-Cann. Burial will follow at Darnall Cemetery.
