Philip “Phil” Spottswood, 77, known affectionately to many as “Big Phil,” passed away on Sunday, August 16, 2026.
Phil was born and raised in the Philippines, where his parents served as missionaries. He later attended boarding school in India during his high school years. He went on to earn his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Tennessee.
Phil devoted his professional life to the care and service of others. He practiced as a clinical psychologist, later served as Commissioner of Mental Health for the State of South Dakota, and went on to serve as CEO of the Mental Health Resource Center in Jacksonville, Florida.
Later in life, Phil felt called to return to school in preparation for a new chapter of service to the Lord. He earned his Master of Divinity from Asbury Seminary, became a pastor, and later served as a missionary in Karaganda, Kazakhstan, through the United Methodist Church.
Above all, Phil loved God and loved others. Whether as a psychologist, public servant, pastor, missionary, husband, father, grandfather, or friend, he sought to serve those around him. That spirit of compassion and service was the thread that ran throughout his life and will remain an enduring part of his legacy. A life of faith, service, and love.
Phil is survived by his wife of 46 years, Michele Spottswood of Paducah, Kentucky; his children, Steven Spottswood of Milwaukee, Matthew Spottswood (Kelly) of Lexington, Kentucky, Abby Dority (Jeremy) of Paducah, Samuel Spottswood also of Paducah, and Nina Elkouz (Philly) of Lexington; his grandchildren, Philip Dority, Laura Dority, Estelle Spottswood, and Clara Spottswood; and the family dog, Lincoln; and his brothers, Curran Spottswood (Nancy), Stephen Spottswood (Muffin), and Paul Spottswood (Lydia).
He was preceded in death by his brother, David Spottswood; brother-in-law, Tom Vice; niece, Laura Spottswood; nephew, Andy Jarrett; and his parents, Curran and Miriam Harrold Spottswood.
