James Michael “Mike” Ryan, 76, of Paducah, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2026.

Born on December 31, 1949, in Paducah, Mike lived a life defined by hard work, adventure, and unwavering loyalty to those he loved. Affectionately known to many as “Watermelon”, he proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War before beginning a long and respected career as a heavy equipment operator working through the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 181.

Outside of work, Mike had a lifelong passion for dirt track racing and was well known as a race car driver. He also enjoyed rebuilding Ford Falcons, combining his mechanical talent with his love for classic automobiles. Alongside his beloved wife, Sonja, he traveled extensively, attending car shows and races across the country, creating countless cherished memories together.

Mike was the kind of man who was always willing to lend a helping hand. Whether it was repairing a vehicle, fixing equipment, or solving a problem, family, friends, and neighbors knew they could always count on him. Even in his final days, when he could no longer use his hands to help, they still turned to him for his knowledge and advice. His generosity, mechanical expertise, and selfless willingness to help others left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Above all, Mike had a deep love for his family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife, Sonja Ryan; his daughter, Aretta Terry and her husband, Nathan; his three cherished grandchildren, Evylee, Kenzlee, and Nate Terry; and his siblings, Kim Rhinerson Floyd and Steve Ryan.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, James Ryan and Patricia Ryan; and his father and mother-in-law whom he loved dearly, Herman and Thelma Mitchell.

Mike will be remembered for his strong work ethic, adventurous spirit, generous heart, love of racing and classic cars, and the kindness he showed through a lifetime of helping others. His legacy of hard work, friendship, and devotion to his family and friends will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew a loved him. His strength sustained him in his final days until he was ready to be with Jesus.
